Beyond your headline score
See what's holding your score back — and what to do first
The free read names your band. It does not rank the six signals against each other — because ranking is exactly the part that turns a fun number into a usable plan.

Every face is a mix. One person is symmetry-strong but jawline-soft; another is golden-ratio-balanced but eye-area-quiet. The free read can't tell you which of your six signals is the one worth your attention — because that ordering only matters once you have decided to act on it.

Example — eyes measured
Your eyes, measured
The full report reads every region like this, each beside its own close-up on your own photo. This is the actual geometry layer from a real 478-landmark run — the same code measures your pixels.
In this sample read the gap between the eyes came out at 1.22× one eye width, and the two canthal lines measured +7.6° and −10.0°. That is the level of detail: not "nice eyes", but the three numbers the eye-area signal is actually built from — spacing, opening and tilt.
What the report does with them is the part worth paying for: it tells you whether your eye area is a strength to lead with in photos, a neutral, or a place where small presentation changes (angle, catchlight, lid emphasis) move the read more than any "fix" would. This tool measures the photo, not your face directly. Lighting, angle, focal length and expression all move the reading.
The same treatment is given to symmetry, golden ratio, thirds, fifths and jawline — six regions, one honest plan. Your own numbers come from your own photo, measured in your browser.

How this attractiveness test works
You choose a clear, front-facing photo. The image is drawn into a canvas inside your browser, resized, and its metadata stripped — no copy is uploaded, stored or sent to a server. A small set of transparent statistics is computed from the pixels: a mirror difference between the left and right halves, the distribution of luminance and edge density across vertical and horizontal bands, and a rough projection of a skin-tone region. Those statistics are mapped onto six broad bands and combined with published weights into the Score.
We publish the whole formula at the methodology page because "formula shown" should mean something. The weights are D_sym 22%, D_gold 20%, D_thirds 18%, D_fifths 14%, D_eyes 14%, D_jaw 12%. They are our disclosed heuristic calibration — not a scientifically universal formula and not a prediction of how any person will rate you.
What your result means
Results are reported as a placement inside a broad reference band rather than a grade out of 100. A reading "inside the broad reference range" means the image statistic sat near the middle of the band we use; it is not a compliment, a diagnosis or a ranking. 100 is not the goal — balanced ranges are wide and strong-looking faces sit all over them.
| Band | What we show | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| 80–100 | Well inside the reference range | Not "top 5%" and not a match prediction |
| 60–79 | Inside the broad reference range | Not a pass/fail grade |
| 40–59 | Around the edge of the reference range | Not a judgement about your appearance |
| Below 40 | Outside the reference band | A wide band — this says little. Distinctive faces land here without being less attractive |
What a single photo cannot support
A single front-facing photo cannot support side-profile claims. Where that is true, we say "not scored" instead of guessing. Nose projection, bridge profile, the true gonial angle and chin depth need a side view or a clinical measurement. Where a front photo cannot support a claim, we write "not scored" instead of inventing a number. This tool measures the photo, not your face directly. Lighting, angle, focal length and expression all move the reading. Lighting, head tilt, focal length, crop and expression usually move a reading more than the underlying geometry does.
Limitations, honestly
- This is not a 478-landmark clinical measurement. Estimated with a lightweight on-device geometry heuristic — not a 478-landmark clinical measurement. We say so next to every number, not in tiny footer text.
- Reference ranges carry bias. Aesthetic reference ranges in the literature carry documented bias. We treat them as rough bands, not ideals. We treat them as rough bands, never as ideals.
- The tool measures the photo, not your face directly. This tool measures the photo, not your face directly. Lighting, angle, focal length and expression all move the reading.
- No ranking, no percentiles, no predictions. We never rank you against an ethnicity-based ideal or against another person's face. The Score is a weak geometric signal. It does not predict matches, dates, replies, or your worth.
- Nothing medical or procedural. No procedures, surgery, fillers or injectables are recommended anywhere on this site.
Tips for a more consistent read
- Use a recent, front-facing, well-lit solo photo with your whole face visible.
- Face a window; avoid overhead light and harsh direct sun.
- Keep the camera at eye level and at arm's length or further.
- Remove sunglasses, hats and heavy filters; keep a neutral expression.
- Retake in the same light and distance if you want to compare two readings.
Where the symmetry reading fits
The symmetry signal is one of six equally-labelled estimates. It is a weak signal about a photograph. It is not one of the things that decides whether someone replies to you. The parts of a dating profile with real leverage are the ones you can edit: your first photo, your bio, the app you choose and how you open a conversation. That is what the optional Dating Report is built around.

What an attractiveness score actually measures
A face-rating score measures one photograph, not a person. Face Rate computes a small set of transparent image statistics — left/right mirror difference, luminance and edge distribution across bands, a rough skin-tone projection — and maps them onto six broad reference bands. The number is a placement inside those bands, not a verdict. 100 is not the target; a wide band simply says little.
Is a face rating test accurate?
Honestly, only weakly. A single front photo under one light and one expression is a tiny slice of how a face presents. Lighting, head tilt, focal length, crop and expression usually move a reading more than the underlying geometry does. We publish the weights and the formula so you can see exactly how little the number is built on — and we never show a percentile, a rank, or a "you are ugly" style output.
What are the 478 facial landmarks?
The optional on-device model maps a face to 478 normalized points: the mesh you see over your photo. From those we derive thirds, fifths, the symmetry axis and the highlighted term. The free estimate uses a lightweight heuristic; the 478-point layer is the more detailed, still-geometry-only measurement. Either way the points never leave your device.
Symmetry, golden ratio, thirds and fifths — what each one means
These are four of the six signals. Symmetry is left/right balance. Golden proportion is how face width, height and feature spacing sit against a broad band. Thirds balances hairline→brow, brow→nose-base, nose-base→chin. Fifths checks the five vertical bands across face width. None is an ideal to hit; they are reference bands, and attractive faces sit all over them.
Can you improve your face-rating score?
Often the biggest moves come from presentation, not geometry: front light, eye-level camera, neutral expression, no heavy filter. Beyond that, the leverage is in your dating profile — first photo, bio, app choice, opener — not in chasing a higher number. That is the line between a fun read and a useful one.
Face rating for dating profiles: what actually moves replies
The score is entertainment and self-insight. Replies are moved by things a photo-statistic cannot see: photo sequence, context, bio clarity, and how you start. The optional Dating Report is built entirely around those editable levers, because they are where the real leverage is.
On-device vs cloud: why your photo never leaves your browser
Face Rate redraws your photo into a canvas, strips EXIF (including GPS), and computes everything locally. Only anonymized, non-identifying numbers are posted for the saved report. No face image is uploaded, stored or trained on. The 478-point model is fetched once and runs on your device.
Attractiveness test vs a "professional" rating app
Most rating apps blur the result, hide the formula, and nudge you toward a subscription. Face Rate shows the formula, shows the bands, and never blurs or locks your own number. The only thing behind a paywall is the deeper report — and that is a one-off purchase, not a recurring charge.
Frequently asked questions
Is the attractiveness test really free?
Yes. Every free tool on Face Rate is free with no account, no email gate, no blurred result and no card required. Your result is never blurred, locked, or held back. The paid reports are separate, one-off purchases: $12.90 for the Face Report and $17.90 for the Dating Report — never a subscription.
Is my photo uploaded or stored?
Your photo is processed on your device. It is never uploaded, stored, sold, or used to train AI. Free scans leave no image behind — everything happens on your device. Only numeric scores are kept for 2 hours, then deleted. Only a handful of numbers (never pixels) are sent so your result link can work. Re-drawing the image into a canvas also strips EXIF metadata, including location.
Is this a scientific or medical assessment?
No. Entertainment & self-insight only. Not medical, psychological, or dermatological advice. Estimated with a lightweight on-device geometry heuristic — not a 478-landmark clinical measurement. The score is a weak geometric signal about one photograph and does not predict matches, dates, replies or your worth.
How is the Score calculated?
Six estimated geometry signals are combined with published weights: D_sym 22%, D_gold 20%, D_thirds 18%, D_fifths 14%, D_eyes 14%, D_jaw 12%. See the full methodology page for the formula, the exact definitions and the limitations.
Can a low score mean something is wrong with my face?
No. Scores are placement inside a broad reference band, not grades. 100 is not the goal. Distinctive faces and expressions can sit outside a wide reference band without being less attractive to people. If a low score is making you feel bad, close the tab. This is a measurement, not feedback that should affect how you see yourself.
Do I need to sign up or give an email?
No. You can take the read, see the complete result and copy it without signing up. An email is only needed if you want the free Photo Checklist or buy the optional report.
What can I actually change after seeing this?
Photos, styling, bio, platform choice and conversation habits — the editable 70%. The free Dating Photo Analyzer and Am I Dateable? quiz start there, and the report turns it into a ranked 8-week plan.
Does Face Rate sell my data or use it to train AI?
No. We never sell your photo and never use it for AI training. No procedures, surgery, fillers or injectables are recommended anywhere on this site. Read the Privacy Policy and delete your data any time.
